The Unbearable TL;DR of the Elderly Nerd
I remember:
8” Winchester drives, computer rooms built on suspended
floors levelled with jacks at every junction, acoustic
couplers linking our Teletype to a mainframe somewhere,
printing rude pictures in ASCII art on tractor feed paper
using the latest DEC PDP 11/23 running the latest software,
making labels with a Photo Mechanical Transfer machine
to use as headings when we Xeroxed them on a copier the
size of a small car which you had to climb inside to replace
the toner, etc, etc.
So much knowledge rendered redundant.
Still, as Stan Laurel said “Easy come, easy go”.
